My Little Piece of History

My house is somewhere near 95 years old.

And like any fine time aged piece of architecture, its got its quirks. (Also known as “flaws” but that would be unkind, because the house can’t help it that she’s so old or that someone thought a galley style bathroom with a width of 3 feet across would work just fine.) No vent in the kitchen, the laundry room is literally falling off, and a few spidery cracks in the foundation. All of which will be dealt with in good time. I plan on giving this house at least 95 more years. Why not?
Right now the issue I’m having has more to do with modern improvements than anything structural… I hate my carpet. After we bought the house we ripped up the disinigrating nasty rug and went for the wood floors underneath. The only problem is those wood floors are , ahem, 95 years old, scratched, splintered and just generally fug. So, when my husband came across a good deal (read: FREE) on enough carpet to do the whole house, we went for it.

Two years later I am longing for laminate, pergo, tile… anything but this vile, stinking nasty carpet. I’ve watched far too many programs on dust mites and other carpet dwelling critters to feel comfortable, and since putting this stuff in my allergies have definitely been worse. Plus, I’m like, really messy. Bad. I spill, forget to wipe my feet after walking barefoot through the mud, let my kids eat in the living room (I know, I know bad mom.) and have a very fluffy, very long haired kitty with bulimia.

(No I’m serious, he throws up after he eats. Otherwise, he’s perfectly healthy, I promise.)

So today I am cleaning my carpet, AGAIN. And hating it STILL. And hoping my husbands home improvement streak (He put ina new front door last week! With a pretty doorbell!) will lead to new flooring sometime in the near future.
