I Should Just Name This The Chicken Blog…

… since that is all I ever talk about. But right now the sun is shining (but not too much!) and I am busy getting my garden and yard all ready so that I can stay inside with the AC on once those triple digit days hit. Because I know they will.

I have determined that this chicken is a tranny. A hot tranny mess for all you PR fans. She looks like a girl, she acts like a girl but she lays no eggs. She should be. Her sister does. I’ve checked and checked and unless she’s sprouted thumbs and built herself an invisible storage box, there are no eggs to be found. Also? She’s mean. Really mean. And she eats an awful lot for not giving anything in return.

Mama don’t like no freeloaders. Sophia the tranny and Rose the bringer of doom to tomato plants far and wide will be finding new homes. That may very well be my freezer. We’ll just have to see.

In return, I will be ordering some of these adorable “Easter Egg” Bantams from My Pet Chicken. I’ve determined that bantams are by far the best choice for urban chicken raising. They are super friendly, take up a heck of a lot less space, make smaller, more garden friendly poo, eat about 1/2 the amount of a standard breed and lay pretty decent sized eggs. So far, our smallest bantams lay 2 eggs a day, equaling a large egg and then some. Plus, making boiled eggs is so fun!

That means in the next couple months we will be raising chicks and a new baby kitten. Good thing I wasn’t planning on taking a vacation or anything! :)
